By The SouthSide Signal Staff BILOXI, MS — A Mississippi police officer has resigned after authorities say he was arrested during an undercover prostitution and human trafficking sting operation at a Gulf Coast casino hotel. According to investigators, Kurwin Smith — an off-duty police officer with the Gulfport Police Department — allegedly responded to an online advertisement connected to prostitution activity and agreed to pay $60 for what was described as a “QV,” commonly known as a “Quick Visit.” What Smith reportedly did not know was that he was allegedly communicating with undercover law enforcement officers participating in a coordinated anti-human trafficking operation. Authorities say investigators instructed Smith to meet at Treasure Bay Casino in Biloxi, where multiple law enforcement agencies were already waiting. When Smith arrived at the designated hotel room, officers immediately took him into custody without incident. Officials say the online advertisement had been posted on a website commonly associated with prostitution activity and ongoing human trafficking investigations. The arrest quickly sparked backlash online due to Smith’s position in law enforcement. Following the incident, the Gulfport Police Department confirmed Smith was removed from duty. He later resigned from the department. Smith is now facing a misdemeanor charge of procuring prostitution. If convicted, he could face up to six months in jail along with possible fines and additional penalties. The case has reignited conversations across social media about accountability, integrity within law enforcement, and the growing use of undercover sting operations targeting prostitution and trafficking-related crimes across the Gulf Coast region. Online reactions ranged from disbelief to frustration, with many users pointing out the irony of a police officer allegedly becoming the target of the very type of investigation officers are sworn to enforce. Authorities have not announced additional arrests connected to the operation at this time. The SouthSide Signal will continue following developments in this story. |
