HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS — Health officials have confirmed the first reported case of West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease in Harris County this year, raising concerns as mosquito season begins across the Houston area.

According to local authorities, a Harris County resident has been diagnosed with the rare but dangerous form of the virus, which can attack the nervous system and lead to severe neurological complications.

West Nile neuroinvasive disease is considered the most serious version of the virus and can cause symptoms including:

  • High fever

  • Severe headaches

  • Muscle weakness

  • Stiff neck

  • Confusion or disorientation

  • Paralysis in extreme cases

Most people infected with West Nile virus experience little to no symptoms, but health experts warn that older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.

Officials are now urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites as warmer temperatures and standing water create ideal breeding conditions throughout Southeast Texas.

Residents are encouraged to:

✅ Use insect repellent
✅ Wear long sleeves outdoors at dusk and dawn
✅ Remove standing water around homes
✅ Keep doors and windows screened

Harris County Public Health says mosquito monitoring and spraying efforts are ongoing in affected areas.

The case serves as an early warning as mosquito-borne illnesses begin increasing during the summer months.

Stay alert. Stay protected.
