During the French Open, Osaka and fellow tennis standout Taylor Townsend organized a private dinner celebrating Black tennis players — a moment that quickly sparked praise, debate, and criticism online.

But Osaka didn’t back down.

Instead, she explained that growing up in the tennis world often meant being one of the only Black faces in the room. She described the connection between Black athletes in the sport as something deeper than competition — calling it community, understanding, and representation.

“Our presence is a present,” Osaka shared.
