A federal judge has sentenced a Downey, California parent of six, Katrina Mason — formerly known as Kris Mason — to nine years in prison after being convicted of orchestrating a large-scale Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) fraud scheme during the pandemic.

According to prosecutors, Mason fraudulently secured more than $2 million in relief funds by creating and submitting applications for four fictitious businesses. Investigators say a significant portion of the money — over $600,000 — was diverted for personal use rather than business or family support.

🔍 Where the Money Went

Federal authorities presented evidence showing funds were used for an extensive personal transformation and lifestyle overhaul, including:

  • Cosmetic and surgical procedures totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars
  • Payments to multiple medical professionals for services performed upfront
  • Financial support for similar procedures for associates
  • Luxury spending on clothing, appearance, and personal branding

⚖️ Courtroom Impact

During sentencing, testimony from the mothers of Mason’s children played a key role. They told the court that no financial support was provided, despite Mason owing over $70,000 in back child support.

The presiding judge emphasized that while personal identity decisions were not on trial, the misuse of federal funds and neglect of parental responsibilities were central to the case.

“This court might have considered leniency had even a portion of these funds gone toward your obligations as a parent.”

Mason’s defense argued that personal struggles contributed to the decisions, but the court ultimately ruled the fraud was intentional and calculated.

🏛️ What Happens Next

In addition to the prison sentence, Mason has been ordered to repay the full $2 million. Federal authorities continue to pursue PPP fraud cases nationwide, many involving millions in misused relief funds.

Mason will serve time in a federal facility designated under current policy guidelines.

🗣️ Bigger Picture

This case highlights ongoing federal efforts to crack down on pandemic-era fraud, as billions in relief funds continue to be investigated.
