AJ Scratch was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and his relationship with music started early.

By junior high school in 1983, he was already blending and mixing music, experimenting with his mother’s album collection while hip-hop was emerging into a powerful new cultural force.

Long before digital software made DJing more accessible, AJ was learning the craft through records, turntables, timing and instinct.

His nickname also has a story that surprises people.

The “AJ” wasn’t taken from another DJ.

It came from legendary race car driver A.J. Foyt, one of his favorite figures from auto racing — AJ’s favorite sport.

When he became fascinated with scratching on the turntables, the pieces came together.

AJ Scratch was born.

He is also clear about one misconception.

Although some have connected his name to the late Kool DJ AJ, known for his work with Kurtis Blow, AJ Scratch says there is no affiliation.

His name and his journey developed independently.

BUILT IN CLEVELAND

Cleveland helped shape the DJ he would become.

AJ names DJ Johnny O and DJ Cochise among the local standards who influenced him as he developed.

Nationally, he studied and admired legendary DJs including Jam Master Jay, DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Scratch.

Those influences helped create a philosophy that AJ still carries today:

DJing is bigger than matching tempos.

For him, the music has to make sense.

The transition has to make sense.

The energy has to make sense.

And most importantly, the audience has to feel like they have been taken somewhere.

“I am a master of music — all genres. It’s not just BPM matching with me. I actually know my music and can take you on a musical journey with my sets.”

That philosophy is at the center of what he calls the Blender experience.

MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

AJ Scratch’s career has taken him across the country, but some moments stand above the rest.

Among his favorite recent experiences were the Cleveland Browns takeovers in Las Vegas in 2024 and 2025, events he describes as simply “epic.”

His longevity has also been officially recognized.

In 2018, AJ received a 30-Year Cleveland DJ Legends Award, honoring decades of work behind the turntables.

But awards and years alone do not define him.

AJ believes his greatest strength is his ability to control a room.

He studies the crowd.

He understands musical eras.

He understands energy.

And he knows when to move from one sound to another.

“No shade to anyone else, but I feel as though no one can curate a party musically and energy-wise like I can.”

That confidence comes from experience.

It also comes from preparation.

AJ does not approach DJing casually.

For him, it is a craft.

A long career in entertainment comes with challenges.

AJ says one of the toughest parts of the business has been dealing with negativity within the DJ community.

Instead of allowing that energy to distract him, he developed a simple approach:

And understand that another person’s success does not have to take anything away from yours.

“There is enough for everyone to eat.”

That mindset has allowed him to continue building instead of getting caught up in competition.

And after more than four decades, he is still thinking bigger.

AJ Scratch has no plans to slow down.

His long-term vision includes performing at some of the largest music festivals in the world.

But he also wants to teach.

One of his major goals is to open his own DJ Academy, creating a place where the next generation can learn more than button pushing and software.

They can learn the history and discipline behind the craft.

And they can learn how to become true DJs.
