Oklahoma City has finished 100th out of America’s 100 largest cities in the 2026 American Fitness Index—marking the seventh consecutive year at the bottom of the rankings. (KOCO)

The annual report examines far more than gym memberships. Cities are evaluated using 35 health and community factors, including physical activity, chronic disease, nutrition, parks, walkability, public transportation and access to recreational resources. (Runner's World)

Oklahoma City joined Memphis, Port St. Lucie, Indianapolis and Lubbock among the five lowest-ranked cities. Meanwhile, Arlington, Virginia, was named America’s fittest city for the ninth straight year. (Runner's World)

But this ranking is not simply about blaming residents for failing to exercise. A community’s design, access to healthy food, safe walking areas and affordable recreational opportunities can all make staying active either easier—or much harder.

The real question is: What changes should city leaders make to help residents live healthier lives?

OKC talks a big game about being a world class city but stuff like this shows we still got a long way to go

Would love to see the city invest in free outdoor fitness stations in every neighborhood park. Low cost and it would actually help

Seven consecutive years. Someone at city hall needs to actually lose their job over this. This is embarrassing

Public transportation here is almost nonexistent. If you dont have a car you basically cant get to a gym or a trail

I run 4 miles every morning so I feel personally attacked lol but seriously the city overall needs way more options for people

Raised in NE OKC too and I can tell you the difference between our parks and the ones up north is night and day

We keep building new stuff downtown but the neighborhoods that need investment the most never seem to get it

I remember when they were talking about expanding the trails network years ago. What happened to all that?

Arlington VA is basically a suburb of DC with tons of bike lanes and transit. Hard to compare to OKC but still we gotta try

The article is right that its not just about gym memberships. I have a gym membership I never use because its not safe to walk to my car at night

I started driving to Scissortail Park just to get a decent walk in. Beautiful park but its not close to most of us on the south side

Memphis and Lubbock also in the bottom five... seems like Southern cities in general need to rethink how they build communities

I would love to walk to work but theres literally no sidewalk for half the route. This is an infrastructure issue plain and simple.

Grew up off MLK and we had one park for like three neighborhoods. Its a design problem not a lazy people problem.

This is embarrassing for our city. Seven years and city leaders still havent made this a priority?

I moved here from Dallas two years ago and the lack of walkable areas shocked me honestly. Everything requires a car.

People always blame the residents but try finding fresh produce in some of these neighborhoods. Food deserts are real here.

I live on the south side and honestly the sidewalks around here are a joke. How are we supposed to walk anywhere safely?
